Modern medicine has made incredible advancements in repairing the human body, but healing from within provides more natural and sustainable results.
The goal of regenerative medicine is to repair and regrow damaged tissue using the human body’s own powerful resources and platelets play a key role in this branch of medicine. The trick is harnessing this power, which we accomplish through platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.
At Active Health Clinics, our team believes in a holistic and integrated approach to healing rather than an interventional one. By working with your body, rather than against it, we’re able to provide our patients in Fort Dodge, Iowa, with the tools they need to lead healthy, active lives.
Read on to explore the power of platelets and learn how they can help harness your body’s natural healing power.
The life force of your body — your blood — contains four ingredients:
- White blood cells
- Red blood cells
Your platelets are flat cells (hence the name) that are primarily responsible for clotting your blood, preventing you from bleeding out. When you injure yourself, your blood vessels communicate the damage and your platelets jump into action.
When they flood the damaged area, they transform, growing tentacles that bind to your blood vessel. By doing this, the platelets form a barrier that prevents your blood from exiting, basically plugging the hole.
This clotting role is the first healing function your platelets fulfill, and it’s an important one — but their job doesn’t stop there.
Your platelets also contain powerful growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular matrix modulators, which they release in the area of your damaged tissue. This combination of healing resources accomplishes several objectives:
- Promotes revascularization (new blood vessels)
- Activates fibroblasts, which produce connective fibers like collagen
- Restores with mesenchymal stem cells
These three actions are incredibly valuable when you’re dealing with a musculoskeletal injury that requires both hard and soft tissue rebuilding and repairs.
Harnessing the power of your platelets
While your body does a great job responding to injury, it takes considerable time and rest for these resources to slowly rebuild from the inside. Unfortunately, our lives are so busy that we often can’t afford the time it takes to heal this slowly.
Take a knee injury, for example. If you were to stay off your knee for several months, you give ample time for your body to go to work. But mobility is important, and that’s where a faster solution like PRP therapy comes in.
Through PRP therapy, we harness the power of your platelets and redirect them to your injured tissue to boost the healing response, creating an “all hands on deck” environment.
To do this, we draw some of your own blood and separate out the platelets in a special centrifuge to create a concentrate. We then mix this concentrate of platelets back in with your plasma and inject the solution into your damaged tissue, giving your body the additional resources for faster healing.
You still need to rest your damaged or injured area, and it may take a few PRP treatments to help the healing process along. But your patience will be rewarded as you regain pain-free movement in your body.
